Spotlight on Shaker Cabinets: Why We Love Them

What is arguably the more popular style of cabinetry here in Melbourne are Shaker style cabinets. It’s no secret why these timeless and versatile cabinets are leaders in this space. Regardless of whether you have a traditional or modern kitchen, and no matter what benchtops, hardware, and fixtures you use with them, Shaker style cabinets always look great.

Where the name “Shaker” originated from

“Shaker” cabinets were originally created by a group known as the “United Society of Believers”, a religious sect which broke away from the Quakers in the late 18th century. They became known as “Shakers” because they literally “shook” their bodies during their worships.

The group moved from Manchester, England to the USA, where they settled in small self-sufficient communities in New York, building furniture both for their homes, and to sell to surrounding areas. The quality of their work earned them a strong reputation for their simple yet solid designs, with their Shaker style cabinets being the most beloved of them all.

Features of Shaker style doors

Because of their popularity and affordability, Shaker-style doors now come in a variety of versions of the original theme.

Doors are typically full overlay (although they can be inset) with the stiles and the rails being 1.5 inches wide or wider. The recessed panels are typically made of plywood, and the door can be made of any species of wood which can be stained or painted.

How Kitchen Shack makes our Shaker cabinets

All of our cabinets here at Kitchen Shack are made right here in Melbourne. Our company invested in cutting edge technology and machinery from Italy and adopted the best practices surrounding lean manufacturing to ensure that we deliver a quality product on time, every time.

Double-sided melamine faced particle board that is 0.6 inches thick is used to construct the cabinet’s four walls. We then add a reinforced melamine-faced MDF backing to reduce the weight of the cabinet while not compromising the bright white finish on the interior surfaces.

We source our cabinet making materials from plantation timber products, all of which meet AS/NZ standards for the manufacturing of both MDF and particle board. Our products are moisture resistant and boast the lowest formaldehyde emissions.

A cabinet is only as solid as its components, which is why we securely fasten our cabinets with heavy-duty cabinet screws and industry-leading Hettich soft-close mechanisms from Germany. Floor cabinets are outfitted with adjustable legs and cover caps that are the same colour as the cabinet, and all cabinets are pre-drilled for handles and hinges so you can position your cabinets exactly where you want in your own kitchen.

We also have a number of cabinet accessories which can arrive pre-installed or be easily installed by yourself or a general contractor. Some of our top accessories include pull-out bins and baskets, pantry storage units, and lazy susans.
