5 Tips for Renovating the Perfect Laundry

5 Tips for Renovating the Perfect Laundry

Designing the perfect laundry can be deceptively difficult to design. Whilst usually one of the smaller spaces in your home, it needs to pack plenty of punch!

1. Choose Your Appliances First

Before designing, pick out your laundry appliances. Their size, shape, and style will play a huge role in shaping the rest of the space. For example, if you prefer a top loader washing machine, you’ll need to account for the extra space it requires. These machines typically take up more room than front loading ones and can impact your cabinetry design. On the other hand, front loading washers and dryers can be conveniently stacked or tucked underneath a benchtop, saving space for other features like storage or folding areas.

Selecting your appliances early will provide a clear direction for your layout, so you won’t have to compromise on functionality later.

2. Be Clear How the Space Will Be Used

It’s important to think about all the ways you’ll use your laundry room. While it’s primary purpose may be washing and drying clothes, many laundries double as mudrooms, pet sleeping areas and extra storage spaces.

Think about all these roles when designing the layout. If it’s where your pet sleeps at night, or where you keep your cleaning supplies, plan to accommodate these needs early on. Adding hooks for leashes, space for a pet bed, or a dedicated spot for mops and vacuum can elevate the functionality of the space and prevent clutter.

3. Include Versatile Storage Solutions

Given the multiple roles your laundry might serve, storage is key. Consider a range of storage options. Most importantly, at least one taller, deeper cupboard for your mops, brooms and vacuum. You’ll also want smaller cabinetry for storing cleaning products and maybe pet essentials. A key trend lately is pull out laundry baskets to hide the dirty clothing. Open shelving can also create a practical touch for frequently used items. The right combination of storage solutions will help your laundry function well.

4. Think about Ventilation

Laundry rooms are often prone to high humidity, especially when dryers or cleaning products are used. Proper ventilation is crucial to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.

Ideally, the laundry should be positioned near an outdoor area, allowing easy access for natural airflow. It that’s not an option make sure to include an exhaust fan or think about other ventilation solutions for your design. This will then help minimise moisture levels and reduce the risk of mould or dampness, while also ensuring a safe spot for storing cleaning products.

5. Make Sure There’s Enough Bench Space

Laundries need to be functional and adequate bench space is vital. You’ll need a surface for folding, sorting or placing items temporarily. It may be tempting to skimp on the benchtop area when space is tight, but doing so could limit your laundry’s functionality. Get creative to incorporate as much bench space as possible.

Traditionally, laundry designs were often designed purely on functionality, and they looked drab. However, recent trends have seen more homeowners infuse style into their laundries, making them an extension of the home’s overall aesthetic. Bold cabinetry, statement floor tiles or a striking splashback can give your laundry room a unique and stylish edge. This small space can be a great opportunity to experiment with colour and texture while still maintaining functionality.
