What do you do when your kitchen is closed off from your living spaces in your home?
That was exactly the problem Jessica faced in her Altona Meadows home.
Before kitchen renovation
Why this Altona Meadows Kitchen needed a new layout
The original kitchen featured an L shaped layout enclosed by a tall wall that housed the refrigerator.
Positioned between the living room and dining area, the old design interrupted the flow through the home and created a barrier between the front living and the outdoor courtyard.
Although functional, the kitchen felt closed in and didn’t have the open flow Jessica wanted.
Working with Kitchen Shack Maribyrnong Designer Hannah, the solution became clear immediately. During the initial design, it was identified that the tall wall surrounding the refrigerator was non load bearing, so it could be removed without major structural changes.
This design solution would completely transform the feel of the home.
Using the existing footprint was ideal because the kitchen was positioned in the centre of the home. This is an ideal location for the heart of the living spaces.
Keeping the plumbing and electrical services in the original positions also minimised renovation costs, freeing up renovation budget for cabinetry and finishes.

Removing the wall instantly opened the home from the front to the back. New stone benchtops now connect the kitchen with the living and flows to the dining areas. Natural light flows freely throughout the spaces to make the home feel brighter and more inviting.
The finished renovation
The re-design has now made better use of every space. A previously under utilised section was transformed into a pantry increasing storage. The original tight pantry was repurposed to now house the refrigerator positioned neatly along the wall and no longer a feature.
The final results have completely changed the way Jessica lives in her home now. The kitchen is a welcoming space for everyday living and entertaining. The improved functionality and storage makes life a lot easier.
Final Kitchen Renovation
The seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living has provided a fresh, modern feel.
This Altona Meadows renovation is an opportunity of experienced design without expensive major structural work. Sometimes, making smarter use of an existing layout is all it takes to create an open feel for modern living.
