What a privilege for Kitchen Shack Forest Hill Designer San to get the chance to design his kitchen, laundry and living room for his new home.

Having recently purchased a property in the Forest Hill location, San knew he would need to renovate to accommodate modern day living.

He welcomed the opportunity to design a completely new kitchen, living and laundry space that would accommodate the needs of his young, growing family. Wanting to create something that would not only be visually appealing, but that would also importantly bring the design into the modern day, make living easy and enjoyable for his young family.

As a professional designer for Kitchen Shack, San was confident he would be able to completely transform the liveability and functionality of the kitchen, laundry and living space for the entire family.

Before Kitchen Renovation

The Kitchen really is the true heart of the home

The brief was simple. Renovate the home making the kitchen the heart.

By changing the location of the kitchen and removing a wall (after consultation with a building engineer that it was not load bearing), the open space between kitchen and living truly encapsulates the modern open plan feel.

Using clever design and finishes of cabinetry and benchtops has created a seamless design between kitchen and living. Selecting contemporary Ultra Matt white with white streamlined handles for his cabinetry gives the kitchen, a light, spacious and modern feel.

After Kitchen Renovation

Great Design is in the details

Incorporating Excel birchply shelving with clever lighting, adds a beautiful detail to the kitchen.

It provides an area where San can showcase some gorgeous cast-iron cookware, and in another part of the kitchen features cookbooks and other much loved items. At the same time, this featured shelving creates ease of accessibility to various kitchen items.

Design of generous under bench drawers provides ample storage for large pots and pans and general cookware, whilst a tall pantry unit provides the perfect storage for food items.

Stunning Island Bench brings the family together

San’s kitchen design features a gorgeous and generously sized island bench, which acts as a stunning centrepiece in the kitchen. Selection of AC stone ‘Daylight’ with 40mm edging with waterfall ends, creates a stylish, luxurious feel. Use of matching stone for the kitchen splashback, enhances the overall light, bright feeling of the kitchen space and contributes to the strong, beautiful visual feel.

Incorporating island bench stools creates a perfect place for San’s young children to sit and chat about their day, whilst the adults go about preparing breakfast, lunch or dinner. It allows the family to connect during food preparation and cooking times, which is precious family time.

San and his family can easily relax when sitting together to eat meals each day at the nearby casual table.

Clever design ‘nooks’

Essentially the kitchen is a galley shape that cleverly incorporates two ‘nooks’ that can act as alternative food preparation spaces if multiple cooks are working in the kitchen, or work as a lovely zoned coffee or appliance area.

The linear workflow is cleverly created through the positioning of the wall oven, cooktop, sink and fridge. These key areas of the kitchen are all within easy reach and hence create efficiency whilst making the most of the space.

Seamless flow in living space

San has created a seamless flow between kitchen and living areas, largely through continued use of the Ultra Matt white streamline cabinetry in the living zone. Use of the same cabinetry in both kitchen and living spaces, demonstrates the versatility and durability of this style of cabinetry, and unifies the two spaces. Use of tall cabinets means that toys and games can be easily stored away, creating a large open play area for San’s young children.

Again, San has carried through the detailing for the TV unit with the Excel Birchply cabinetry creating a unique design. This not only looks great but makes clever use of wall space.

Bright, Airy Laundry ties in with the rest of the home

Whilst separate to the kitchen and living areas, San has continued the theme of the Ultra Matt White cabinetry this time with profile white handles as well as the AC Stone benchtop and splashback stone.

With the luxury of a large laundry space, he has cleverly designed in room for an under bench washing machine and two dryers. Incorporation of tall pantry units with profile white handles, and overhead cabinets provides excellent storage space mops, brooms, vacuum and all laundry items.

When the door between the laundry and the living areas is open, the sense of flow and unity is enhanced due to the consistent use of cabinetry and benchtop/splashback stone. A white sliding door closes off the laundry from the rest of the house when desired.
