Merrijig Kitchen-Laundry Renovation

Merrijig Kitchen-Laundry Renovation

How do you renovate a country Kitchen & Laundry?

If you’ve ever ventured up to the Victorian snowfields, chances are, you’ve driven through the town of Merrijig. Surrounded by rolling green hills, meandering creeks and roads lined with towering gums, it’s easy to see the attraction.

This left Emma and Ben jumping at the chance to own a country retreat when it came on the market in 2022. It was the perfect place for their two young kids and puppy to run wild and experience country life.

The owner’s grandfather originally owned all the surrounding land, and as a child playing in the neighbouring area, he can remember looking up at the old home with intrigue. It was once used as a night club, complete with a large sparkling disco ball! Not what you would expect in quiet country town. But now how to renovate the property but keep it with the aesthetics of the country?

Visualise your dream kitchen

The old beauty was ripe for renovation and a new lease of life. Emma was up for the challenge, armed with plenty of ideas and a passion for interiors. She did plenty of research and knew exactly what elements she wanted; however, she couldn’t picture how it would quite look once complete.

“I had a vision in mind as to what I wanted for the kitchen and laundry, but unsure how I could execute it” so she started searching for the perfect kitchen company.

A friend referred them to Kitchen Shack having also completed a kitchen renovation and was blown away by the quality of finish and pricing.

After exploring the website and previous renovations on the blog, they knew it was the right company for their kitchen and laundry makeover.

Being savvy on the renovation process, they measured their spaces, then booked a free in-store design appointment, where they met with Nita from Kilsyth.

All their ideas finally came together! The 3D renders were a great assistance to visualise the new spaces. With Nita’s help all their questions were answered, and design problems solved.

As Emma says, “I thoroughly enjoyed the design process and thank Nita for her collaborative contributions to our design. The result is fantastic and didn’t cost the earth, and our kitchen is so functional.”

Should kitchens be designed for functionality or aesthetics?

Emma and Ben chose the Kitchen Shack Terril Shaker cabinetry, rather than the navy, as this was better suited to the over-all style of the home. The moody darker cabinetry helps to anchor the kitchen area in a large open plan space, that is flooded with natural light. The aesthetics are devine however the layout is carefully designed with designated task areas and great workflow around the large island bench for easy entertaining.

As it’s a holiday retreat, they allowed for plenty of storage for platters and generous double door pantry with pull-out drawers where everything is within easy reach.

To complete the classic country style, Emma had her heart set on white stone benchtops. Realising the cost of transport from Melbourne to Merrijig – not a cheap exercise, they sourced a local bench top supplier for their project. Saving money in transport costs allowed them to allocate more money to the laundry renovation.

How should your laundry look for a holiday home?

For the laundry renovation they chose White Shaker cabinets. The room was a smaller space with less natural light so white keeps it open and bright.

Being an area not “on show” alternative products that are cheaper in price is the perfect solution. The layout was kept simple and streamlined, with a generous timber laminate benchtop for folding laundry, and full height storage cupboards.

Choosing laminate benchtops for their laundry was another money saver, and a smart choice for its hard-wearing capabilities. The best feature is the pull-out washing drawers to hide or the holiday washing – it’s the simple things, right?

Living the renovation dream.

Emma and Ben are thrilled with their new kitchen and laundry renovation and felt the whole process was easy and enjoyable.

The install went without a hitch, and they were grateful to have had such a professional team to work with. ” Matt, our recommended installer was fantastic, and we appreciated his attention to detail. I won’t hesitate to recommend Kitchen Shack to others and look forward to hopefully doing another project with them in the future.” Thanks Emma for choosing Kitchen Shack!

Their dream kitchen has been put to the test by family and friends, and it’s a winner! In fact, they all love it so much they never want to leave. That’s not a problem… if they hang around to do the dishes!

A true country entertainer and a testament to the idea “that great things can be achieved on a small budget”. They have now recommended Kitchen Shack to their Mum, who is also keen to have a new dream kitchen like Emma and Ben’s.
